Skin Peels

Peel back the years...

Skin Peels

Although the term may sound dramatic, chemical skin peels are actually just a way to trigger a deep exfoliation process.

Over time, the surface layer of the skin thickens and creates a build-up of dead skin cells that slow the normal exfoliation rate of the outer surface layer. This slowing of your skin's natural cell renewal rate in turn creates cell build up that makes your skin look dull, old and unattractive.

Chemical peels remove these damaged outer skin layers to reveal a smoother rejuvenated younger looking skin.

There are basically three different types of peel available: the light, superficial peels (AHA) medium peels (TCA) and deep peels (Phenols).

  • Light Peels are most commonly performed using Alpha Hydroxyl Acids (AHAs). Glycolic acid, derived from sugar cane is the most commonly used AHA. Glycolic acid breaks the intracellular bonds, decreasing the 'glue' that holds the dead skin cells on the skin surface. These superficial peels remove the epidermis (top layer of the skin) to reveal healthy skin underneath. Regarded as 'lunch-time procedures', minimal recovery is needed. A course of 3-4 treatments are generally required and maintenance treatments are then recommended to maintain the results.

Glycolic acid peels at The Hadleigh Clinic are carried out by one of our Aesthetic nurses using 30-70% Glycolic Acid solution.
  • Medium Peels are usually performed using Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA). They have the same benefits as light peels however they remove skin cells from the epidermis and the upper part of the dermis (the middle layer of the skin).Medium Peels improve conditions such as sun-damaged skin, irregular pigmentation, pre-cancerous skin lesions and light wrinkles.

Medium Peels at The Hadleigh Clinic are carried out by one of our doctors using 30% TCA.
  • Deep Peels such as Phenol peels are used for large wrinkles and have dramatic effects. However they are generally performed under general anaesthetic as they are very invasive and involve 4-6 weeks of recovery. We DO NOT perform this type of peel in our clinic
